Cycling at 13km/h uses approximately 38W, this is less than a car uses to power a single headlamp (60W) [1].
The first electric vehicle, a tricycle was invented by Gustave Trouve in 1881. By 1882 an improved version was made that could travel 30-50 km at a speed of 14.4km/h (on unsealed road of course) [3]. A few years later in 1898 Lohner Porche produced his first vehicle. It was an all wheel drive electric car. He followed this up later with a petrol electric hybrid [4].
In Freiberg, Germany, 29% of shopping trips are made by foot, 26% by public transport, 24% by bicycle and only 14% by car [2].
The fuel economy of the 1903 Model T ford was 25 mpg. The average American Ford for the Year 2003 guzzled 20.8mpg, down from 22.1 in 1998 [5].
