Drive less!

The level of car use in New Zealand and Australia was unsustainable long before SUVs became fashionable. Whilst this can not be solved overnight, we can at least change the direction we are taking.

Options New Zealand, and to a lesser extent Ausralia have barely noticed include:

Integrated smart card systems That work conveniently on all forms of public transport, taxis and car sharing schemes.

Car Sharing A neighbourhood collectively own or lease a fleet of vehicles, which can be used with a simple electronic booking system.  Advantages are fewer cars and a wider choice of vehicles to suit the application: minivans, micro-cars, 4WDs....

Alternative bikes The bicycle has always been the world's most efficient transport, and it continues to evolve.  There are recumbent bikes, pedal/electric vehicles, multi-person bikes, bike trailers, a wide range of child carrying options, protection from rain, folding bikes...

Light rail and bus rapid transit.

High speed rail  Reduces the need for flying (which is as greenhouse intensive as driving).

A high tech version of hitch-hiking An interesting idea from Switzerland, for rural areas.

Car Hire  It costs 100 to 300 dollars per week to own and run a car. In comparison the cost of hiring a car a few times a year, or using the occasional taxi is trivial.

Light electric vehicles Lighter, smaller, safer, slower, quiet and efficient.
